Viatrix had been thinking about the benefits of having a tail-brace.

She had seen how well it worked for the healer, Sugarra, and one day decided to ask the blacksmith to make one for her as well.

On the morning that she was to pick up her newly-made tail-brace, Viatrix told her new apprentice, Cynthia, that they would start their training session a little differently today. She wanted to test her apprentice's stealth skills, so the caracal was to stay out in the main path of their forest in hiding, wait until she saw Viatrix, and then try to ambush her.

Viatrix picked up her tail-brace from the blacksmith and went out for a walk, uncharacteristically forgetting about what she'd told Cynthia. It wasn't her fault, of course. A lot of things can be on your mind when your leader just up and leaves you in charge of a very confused and disarrayed empire.

Viatrix never heard Cynthia creeping along in the undergrowth, nor did she see the little caracal leaping from behind her. She did, however, hear the yowl of pain when the young apprentice's jaws locked on a very inconvenient place on the silver gladiator's tail.

... Sugarra said that Cynthia was going to be fine, despite her now-missing back-tooth and the small scar on the side of her tongue.

Coincidentally, Viatrix decided to give up the tail brace that very same day. This was also the day that some kind stranger decided to donate their quartz gems to Cynthia to make her armor a little prettier, and the day the blacksmith suggested that Cynthia wear a little more armor for her abdomen and neck.
